Building more council homes for the local community

Why Haringey Council is building new council homes

Haringey Council has an ambitious home building programme to deliver the first new council homes in a generation, with as many as possible built on existing council owned land. Our aim is to build 3,000 new homes in the next decade: work has already been completed or begun on more than 2,000 homes across the borough.

Housing is an important priority for Haringey Council as like many other local authorities, we have an acute shortage of affordable homes in the borough. We have almost 12,500 households on our council home waiting list, and many of these are families with young children in overcrowded conditions.

Handing-over the keys to a new council home: Cllr Peray Ahmet (Leader of the Council), Cllr Ruth Gordon (Cabinet Member for Council Housebuilding, Placemaking, and Development ) and Robbie Erbmann (Asst. Director of Housing) giving a family the keys of a new council home at Rosa Luxemburg Apartments in Tottenham Hale.

Our programme also includes a series of supported housing schemes for our vulnerable residents who have suffered homelessness, including rough sleeping, and who are being provided with onsite care and support to help them into independent living.

Energy efficient homes to reduce tenants' bills and to help the environment

All our new councils homes are designed to both cut carbon emissions and to reduce residents’ energy bills. Our new council home developments are always well-insulated and developments often incorporate air source heat pumps, solar panels, PassivHaus principles, natural shading and ventilation, green roofs and other methods to cut energy use.
